The sector is formed by cardamom exporters that represent 75% of Guatemala's total production. The sector was formed over fifteen years ago and has historically contributed to the development of smallholders and medium-size growers of the area. It has contributed to the Northern Highway Belt of Guatemala. In addition to buying cardamom beans (parchment), cardamom traders who are members of the subsector make contributions to producer communities in several ways. Technical assistance is provided to smallholders and development projects are financed, including of community banks and support for local entrepreneurs, who also receive inputs, training and specialized field technicians in each project.
